Jody Fisher: Bio/Resume

Jody Fisher was born in South Bend, Indiana and spent most of his childhood years moving throughout the country. His father, a successful radio broadcasting figure, and his mother an actress, provided the creative environment that allowed him to pursue his avid interest in both music and the guitar. By age eleven, Jody was taking lessons in the Chicago area. During this time, he also studied with his uncle, jazz guitarist Sid Fisher who had spent many years as an RCA recording artist. After moving to the West Coast as a teenager, Jody continued taking lessons with some of the top players living in the Los Angeles area, including, Herb Ellis, John Collins, and Louis Speigner. It was during these years that he also attended The Stan Kenton Music Clinics. Jody eventually began studying with guitarist/bassist, George Stanley, who started bringing him to gigs and introducing him to other players. From this point on, Jody made a steady living playing the guitar.
As a performer, Jody has played virtually every style of music professionally. He has played many important venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Universal Amphitheater. Today, he is primarily known as a jazz artist living in the Southern California area and has recently worked all over the United States, Canada, England and Germany. His newest CD, Impromptu, has received critical acclaim.
Jody has published over twenty instructional books about jazz guitar with Alfred Publishing, Workshop Arts Publications, and Mel Bay Publications. Four of his books have appeared in the Smithsonian Institute's Folkways Exhibition in Washington, DC. In addition Jody has written for most of the major guitar magazines, including Guitar Player, Just Jazz Guitar and Finger Style Guitar.
As an educator, Jody has held the positions of Professor of Jazz and Studio Guitar at the University of Redlands, in Redlands, CA, the University of La Verne, in La Verne, CA, and the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA), in Idyllwild, CA. In addition, he has also served as Associate Director of the National Guitar Workshop as well as Director of the Workshop's Jazz Summit in the early years of that program. Jody continues to conduct seminars and clinics all over the country.

--Clinics--
All clinics are available in a one-day, three-day, or five-day format. Daily sessions run five hours per day.
Minimum class size: 5 students. All clinics include a daily "workout" to help develop better technique.
Students should bring the following: Guitar, small amp (optional), notebook, manuscript paper, guitar "grids". Cassette or mini-disk recorders OK.
Please no video recorders. Books available.

"The Art of Solo Guitar"
Becoming a solo guitarist is an ongoing learning experience that will reward you with a highly personal form of expression.
The skills you develop will transfer directly to group playing as well.
The first part of this clinic focuses on the nuts and bolts of solo guitar playing.
Basic fingerboard knowledge and theory are covered followed by extensive information about chords, harmony and basic arranging skills.
The second part deals with more advanced arranging techniques, ornamentation, stylistic concerns, and adding the element of improvisation to your solo work

"Jazz Skills"
This clinic delivers an overview of the most important skills players must master.
The topics include, Improvisation, Chord Melody, Technique and Repertoire Development.
The class begins with the basics in each area and goes on to show the student how to chart a course to their own improvement.
Playing through changes, creating arrangements, playing with confidence and making the most of your practice time are just some of the other subjects addressed.
This clinic is ideal for filling the gaps in your knowledge.

"Letting Go"
A Skills and Creativity Workshop for Guitarists
Many guitarists spend a lot of time honing their skills to increase their chops and become more competent players.
Others spend a lot of time working on developing a unique new voice of their own.
This clinic will show you how to bring these two areas of guitar artistry together. During the "skills" portion of the day, the students will concentrate on improvisation, chord vocabulary, technique and various other skills having to do with becoming a competent player.
Later in the clinic, the students will learn methods to increase their creativity and become much more prolific in their musical lives.
Topics will include, stream of consciousness playing, productivity, writing music for guitar, turning off the censor and breaking out of self-limiting perceptions.
This class is best suited for intermediate to advanced players of all styles and ages, amateur and professional.
